Green teams have a bad reputation. Set up with the best of intentions in many organisations, they seem to stagnate due to lack of support, skills and focus. As a result, their effectiveness and contribution to an organisation’s sustainability performance is often questioned. Yet staff engagement in an organisation’s sustainability efforts is vital and complements green policy, infrastructure and procedures.
‘Green Teams’ and ‘Eco-champions’ can provide an effective way of tapping into staff interest and participation in sustainability initiatives. They just need time, love and care! The Monash Sustainability Institute’s Green Steps program equips participants with skills and knowledge to improve the sustainability performance of their organisation. We have partnered with a number of organisations to create unique programs for their green teams.
These focus on skills training, team building and the development of staff-led projects, and provide an innovative model to engage staff, build sustainability capacity and improve environmental performance and have worked on projects with the City of Yarra, the YMCA, Wannon Water, Monash University and the National Australia Bank.
The 6th Making Cities Liveable Conference held in conjunction with the Sustainability Conference “SustainableTransformation” would like to sincerely thank Mr Mark Boulet, Manager, Green Steps program, Monash Sustainability Institute for his presentation at the previous conference held 17th – 19th June 2013 at Novotel Melbourne St Kilda.
Mr Boulet’s seminar sent delegates walking away with the following outcomes: A better understanding of how staff engagement fits into the sustainability program of your organisation; new principles to utilise when forming (or reviewing) your organisation’s green team; ideas to focus the work of your green team and to give it direction and; examples of how other organisations have engaged and involved their staff focusing on the often poorly understand and underutilised area of staff engagement in environmental sustainability; this presentation will enable you to get the most out of your green team or committee and make staff involvement an effective part of your organisation’s sustainability program.
The Making Cities Liveable Conference looks forward to reconvening in 2014 with venue and dates being released on our website soon!!
